However, all you need is a shallow plastic container—ideally with a lid—and zero biology background to begin. Now let’s talk about the blankets. Put away your gourmet grains; oats, wheat bran, or chicken feed will do the trick. Cover the base of the container by spreading it out an inch or two. The key, though, is moisture. Once in a while, toss in some potato, carrot, or apple slices. They remain hydrated and content as a result. If something begins to smell musty or grows mold, simply replace it.
You will begin to observe the life cycle in action within a matter of weeks. Beetles emerge from their pupae stage and continue to deposit eggs. You will soon have access to a sustainable, locally produced protein supply. On your shelf, there’s a miniature ecology at work.
Place the container in a warm, approximately room temperature, spot. Avoid placing mealworms on the windowsill and instead locate a warm, shady spot, as they dislike both the cold and direct sunshine.
